Rich discourse does not happen by accident; it requires intentional structural shifts that move students from passive compliance to active thinking. Grounded in Peter Liljedahl’s Building Thinking Classrooms® framework and aligned with the updated Washington State Standards, this interactive session explores how to cultivate a vibrant culture of collaborative discourse.
Educators will experience how combining research-based routines with standard-aligned tasks transforms classrooms into equitable spaces where every voice is leveraged to make sense of content.
Through hands-on participation, attendees will analyze how the structural pillars of a thinking classroom (such as random groups, vertical non-permanent surfaces (VNPS), and curated tasks) naturally elicit the communication demanded by the revised standards.
