Making Sense of the Math Standards
Tuesday August 11, 2026 8:30am - 9:45am PDT
The Washington State Mathematics Learning Standards (WA Math 2025) are here!
In this interactive session, participants will explore what has changed, what remains familiar, and how the updated standards impact instruction and student learning across middle and high school mathematics. Through guided activities and discussion, we will examine how the new standards are organized and how they support coherence, reasoning, and sense-making across courses and grade bands.
Participants will engage in a structured walk-through of WA Math 2025, with attention to:
  • What is new and what remains familiar in secondary content and expectations
  • Key organizational shifts, including the reorganization of standards into domains and the integration of Data Analysis and Data Science
  • Fluency expectations across number sets, emphasizing flexibility, efficiency, and accuracy rather than speed or memorization
  • Connections to instruction, including reasoning, modeling, representations, and student discourse in secondary classrooms
  • Implications for course planning and alignment, with opportunities to reflect on current practice and identify next steps
This session is designed for mathematics educators, instructional coaches, and leaders, and will support understanding of how WA Math 2025 promotes coherence and alignment across middle school and high school mathematics.

Figuring Out Fluency in the Math Standards
Tuesday August 11, 2026 10:00am - 11:15am PDT

True mathematical fluency requires more than speed and basic fact memorization. Grounded in the Figuring Out Fluency framework, this interactive session helps educators dismantle traditional approaches and build a shared foundation for deep mathematical sense-making. We will explore the three core pillars of fluency, efficiency, flexibility, and accuracy, and map out how to build student strategies before introducing formal procedures.

Leading the Transition: Key Shifts, Implementation, and Instructional Leadership
Tuesday August 11, 2026 12:45pm - 2:00pm PDT
The newly adopted Washington State Mathematics Standards (WA Math 2026) are now available, and educational leaders play a critical role in supporting successful implementation. This interactive session is designed for administrators, instructional coaches, and district leaders who are preparing to lead learning, align systems, and support high-quality mathematics instruction across schools and districts.

Participants will:
  • Examine what has changed and what remains familiar in the Washington State Mathematics Standards and consider implications for systemwide implementation.
  • Identify connections between the standards and instructional practices that promote reasoning, problem-solving, modeling, and student engagement.
  • Consider leadership actions and next steps to support educators and students during the transition to WA Math 2026.

Teaching Linear Functions Through Real-World Application and New Standards
Tuesday August 11, 2026 12:45pm - 2:00pm PDT
Linear functions are often reduced to abstract procedural rules, but the revised state standards demand a shift toward authentic modeling and true conceptual rigor. In this interactive session, educators will unpack the updated framework for linear functions, shifting focus away from rote memorization and toward dynamic real-world applications. We will explore how to use engaging context—such as linear programming, resource constraints, and data analysis—to bring concepts like systems of equations and varying solution types (one, none, infinitely many) to life.Participants will learn how to design low-floor, high-ceiling learning environments that provide accessible entry points for all students without lowering academic expectations. We will model practical instructional moves that embed the Mathematical Practices naturally into daily lessons. Educators will discover how to support multilingual and struggling learners through concrete, physical anchors like stairs and roof pitches, while simultaneously leveraging technology through spreadsheets to analyze scatter plots and lines of best fit.

Standards Palooza:
Power Standards with Purpose:
Teaching Linear Functions Through Real-World Application and New Standards
  • Unpacking the new standards for linear functions
  • Connecting standards to authentic modeling tasks (arithmetic functions, systems)
  • Using real-world contexts to improve engagement (one, no solution, many solutions)
  • Supporting multilingual and struggling learners (physical connection, stairs, roofs)
  • Embedding Mathematical Practices naturally
  • Using spreadsheets to strengthen conceptual understanding (scatter plots, line of best fit)
  • Building rigor through application instead of memorization (linear programing)
  • Creating accessible entry points without lowering expectations
